June 10, 2010: President's Challenge and National Fitness Awards Ceremony
Several Sacred Heart of Jesus School students were awarded Physical Fitness Awards at a ceremony held on June 10, 2010. COL Jesse Germain, was the guest speaker and his message was briefly: It's important to have a strong mind, a strong body, and a strong spirit. We must work on each aspect (mind, body, spirit) so that we are well rounded and capable of meeting life's demands. It is easy to "Talk the Talk" ...my challenge for you, students of Sacred Heart, is to "Walk the Walk"...find time everyday to study hard for the mind, exercise hard for the body, and pray peacefully for the spirit.

Brigadier General Patrick Finnegan, Dean of the Academic Board at nearby West Point and grandfather of one of our own Sacred Heart children, was a guest reader for the event. Additionally, parents and students alike took advantage of an opportunity to browse the shelves and make purchases at the Scholastic Book Fair.
Our next family night is focused on sports and wellness and is scheduled for November 12th. See you there!

October 7, 2009: Update on the "No Cold Feet" Shoe Drive

October 7, 2009: Apple Picking in the Hudson Highlands
On September 30th, Grades K-3 from Sacred Heart of Jesus School, through the kindness and support of our wonderful School Board, took the classroom outdoors. After eagerly piling on the bus, we set off for Dubois Farm north of Milton, NY for some old-fashioned apple and pumpkin picking.
Spirits were high and our expectations were not disappointed. After a scenic drive along the Historic Hudson River, through neighborhoods both urban and suburban, we found ourselves in the rolling Hudson Highlands and a great cheer erupted from all the students, teachers and parents who assisted us. We met farmer Dave for a gentle tractor powered hay wagon ride to the cornfields. There we disembarked to wend our way through the challenging corn maze. We worked together as teams and played follow the leader until we emerged victorious into the pumpkin patch!
Another short ride brought us to the picnic grove where we had lunch and were visited, much to the children's delight, by two gamboling and playful kid goats! They tried to help up finish up our lunch so we could play. The goats were sent to "time out" while the children played in the pint-sized schoolhouse, store and cabin like structures that surrounded the nearby Indian climbing rock. We then hiked up the trail to visit our goat pals again and all the rest of the farm animals, petting, feeding and generally oohing, aahing and enjoying them.
Finally it was time for the highlight of our trip, apple picking! Farmer Dave led us to the grove of ripe Gala apples that were laden with red juicy, beautiful apples. We were allowed to pick as many as we could carry in our apple bags, being sure to choose some extra juicy ones for our principal, Mrs. Sutton, and of course one for our friendly bus driver too.
Back at the picnic grove, after choosing a pumpkin from the patch, we found a special treat of fresh cider and homemade cinnamon doughnuts awaited us. UMMMM, GOOOOD! We reluctantly waved farewell to the Dubois family and their Eden-like farm, as we returned to the bus. The ride back to school was noticeably quiet as some very tired, but very happy and grateful students returned safely to our beloved Sacred Heart of Jesus School, having been enriched with a better understanding of rural communities as well as the marvelous bounty and providence of our Creator.

September 14, 2009: Another Exceptional Day at Sacred Heart of Jesus School
At 9:00 A.M. on Monday Sept. 14, Pastor Fr. Jack Arlotta, Principal Donna Sutton, and students in grades K through 8 raised a very special flag above the church and school property.
Last year, through the efforts of 6th grade teacher, Teresa Ross McBarron, SHS received a flag from the men and women of the Joint Provincial Reconstruction Team Paktika as a gift from the Soldiers and Sailors currently serving in Afghanistan. This particular flag flew over their headquarters at Forward Operating Base Sharana, Afghanistan for the students and staff of Sacred Heart of Jesus School on February 4th 2009. Then the flag was sent to SHS in commemoration of the event.
PRT Paktika is a joint Army, Navy and Civilian organization specifically designed to help rebuild the capacity of the provincial government in the province of Paktika, on the Afghan/Pakistan border. The team also assists the local Afghan people through training and reconstruction efforts, in hopes of restoring this region of Afghanistan after nearly 30 years of war.
Sacred Heart of Jesus School chose today to fly the flag over their school, because today their eighth grade kicks off their “No Cold Feet Shoe Drive” in conjunction with the Army officers stationed in Afghanistan. Students will be bringing in gently used or new shoes along with a photo and note written by them to pass on to the child who will receive the shoes. This way, according to the 8th graders, the children in Afghanistan will have warm feet this winter.
After explaining to the children why this flag is so special, the flag was raised by the 8th grade and prayers were offered for our troups all over the world, especially the Team in Paktika Afghanistan. All then recited the Pledge of Allegiance and commenced by singing: “God Bless America”.
It was a beautiful day, and some passers by even stopped their cars to watch or to participate in the ceremony. A commemorative plaque will hang in the school hallway. It was an exceptional day indeed.
Click here to view a photo gallery of the flag raising ceremony.
September 14, 2009: Kicking Off the "No Cold Feet" Shoe Drive
Have you ever had cold feet? Well, maybe not, but many children in Afghanistan have and we have an opportunity to help these children have warm feet this winter.
The 8th graders at Sacred Heart School, as part of an outreach program in preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation, have joined with Army officers stationed in Afghanistan. The "No Cold Feet" shoe drive will begin on Monday, September 14th and conclude on Monday, September 28th.
What can you donate? You can donate gently used or new children's shoes. Tennis shoes, school shoes or play shoes are appreciated. We will not be collecting flip flops, sandals, boots, Crocs or dressy shoes.
How can you donate? Please place shoes in Ziploc bags and have your child bring them to school at the beginning of the day. The 8th graders will be collecting the shoes as the children enter the school. If possible, we'd like the children to include a picture to pass on to the child who will receive the shoes in Afghanistan. If the children would like to, they can include a short note or illustration to make their donation more personal.
We ask that you donate what you can and if you don't have shoes to donate, any monetary donation to offset the cost of shipping the shoes would be most appreciated.
Let's work together to reach our gal of collecting 150 pairs of shoes to help improve the lives of the innocent victims of the war in Afghanistan.
God Bless!
September 2, 2009: Back to School
The Sacred Heart of Jesus School administration and teachers received the students back to school today in our traditional outside ceremony. Mrs. Donna Sutton, our school principal, welcomed the returning students and parents, and especially embraced the new families into our SHS family. With the help of the 8th grade class, Mrs. Sutton led the school in a prayer service, which was followed up by some remarks and a blessing by our pastor, Father Jack Arlotta. It was a great beginning to what will surely be an even greater school year.
July 31, 2009: Graduation
Our 8th graders completed their elementary and middle school journey last month with a wonderful graduation ceremony. The event began with a Mass, followed by the formal graduation ceremony. Following the ceremony, cake and punch were served with a slide show. We will miss these beautiful young men and women dearly, and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

We held our first ever Touch A Truck event on May 31st. This event was a huge success! Hundreds of people had the opportunity to see, climb on, honk horns, and have their pictures taken with a huge variety of vehicles: frontloaders, fire trucks, police cars, military vehicles, limosines and more! Many also shopped the available vendors and the Sacred Heart Tag Sale. Children of all ages wore their hard hats and enjoyed the craft tables, bouncy bounce, face painting, and raffles! The Science Van also returned to the school for the entire community to enjoy. (Hard) hats off to Maureen Arias-Wolfe for chairing such a fabulous event.

June 15, 2009: 2d-3d Grade Author Party
The second and third grade students at Sacred Heart are mystery fiction writers! Inspired by the recent visit of James Gelsey, author of Scooby-Doo books, the students participated in a writing contest that required each student to write their own mystery story. The students journeyed through the Writing Process and produced phenomenal mystery stories. The second and third grade students wrote 110 pages in all. Mrs. Krachy and Mrs. Miller, the second and third grade teachers, gave the children an author's party on June 12th to celebrate the students' writing, play games, and announce the winners. The winners of the contest were decided by the Sacred Heart teachers based on a writing rubric. The winner in second grade was Anna Henderson and the runner-up was Gabriel Glen. The winner in third grade was Natalie Bartholet and the runner-up was Benny Storms. The winners were given a basket of writing tools to be used for their next writing adventure. The project required the students to use salt and other household ingredients to mummify grocery store whole chickens. After several applications of the mummifying mixture over six weeks of time, the students rubbed the chickens with oil and spices and wrapped them in linen.

Teacher Appreciation Week was a huge hit. The students and families of Sacred Heart of Jesus School went "all out" in order to show their appreciation for our hard working teachers. Before the week began, each teacher's door was decorated to fit this year's "All Star" theme. During the week the students sprinkled the teachers with cards, candy, and flowers. The Family Association board put together a continental breakfast on Monday, and a luncheon on Tuesday, where the teachers were able to imbibe in some of the best recipes families had to offer. A special thanks to all who made this wonderful week happen.

February 19, 2009: Science Fair
Sacred Heart students once again showed off their talents and hard work at the school's annual Science Fair. The student work was on display for all to see, and each student received an opportunity to discuss their project one-on-one with Mrs. Sutton, the school principal.
Faculty and staff from the West Point departments of Chemistry, Physics, Behavioral Sciences and Leadership, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Math, and Civil and Mechanical Engineering set up laboraties for the Sacred Heart students and families. These laboratories provided hands-on opportunities to experience some "cool" science. A special thanks goes out to West Point for their support of this event, and our own Plinio DelosSantos for coordinating the entire event.

February 7, 2009: Young Scientists at Work
Pre-K4 under the watchful eye of Mrs. Mercado engaged in science experiments that were fun and do-able. They explored magnets, sounds, water, static electricity and color mixing. The classroom was set up with five different "hands-on" working centers filled with opportunities for exploration and discovery.

January 31, 2009: Catholic Schools Week
Sacred Heart of Jesus concluded its celebration of Catholic Schools Week yesterday with a talent show where children from all grades displayed a myriad of talents for their peers. The week began with a family Mass on Sunday, followed by "Crazy Day" on Monday where the students were allowed to wear crazy hats, hair, and socks. On Monday afternoon the kids were treated to an Ice Cream Social, much to the delight of the teachers who always enjoy having a classroom full of kids on a "sugar high". On Tuesday we held the Academic Bowl which pushed the kids to their limits with very tough questions. This year's winner was "Team Maroon". Thursday's Spirit Day was a lot of fun, with the return of alumni to help us cheer and play basketball. Overall, Catholic Schools Week was a wonderful event that allowed us to celebrate all that we are blessed to have here at Sacred Heart of Jesus School.

January 23, 2009: The Gala Was a Smashing Success!
The Sacred Heart School Family Association held it's first annual Gala fundraiser on Friday night. A great time was had by all who attended. The event featured fine dining, live and silent auctions, and awesome entertainment. Broadway hits were performed by each school class, in addition to a number performed by the faculty and staff. Other performances included a clown magic show, "Children Say the Darndest Things" hosted by Father Jack, a "Neil Young" knockoff (Andy Glen), and "Name That Tune". The evening was topped off with a performance right out of "Mama Mia", and awesome rock music performed by our own Stephen Storms. Proceeds from this event are targeted for school operations and activities. A special thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this such a great event.
