Summer Reading and Math for Students Entering Grade 4

Reading

  1. Read as many books as you can this summer. One book you choose must be either a Newberry Winner or a Newberry Honor Book. Be sure to choose books on your reading level. All books should be chapter books of some length. Below, you will find a reading list of some books. You may read books not on this list, provided that they are appropriate for your reading level.
  2. Make a list of the books you read this summer. Your list will be due the first week of school.
  3. You must complete a minimum of 2 book reports. One of the reports must be done on a Newberry book. These reports are due the first week of school also.
  4. The format for book reports should include:
    • An illustrated cover, with the book title and author
    • A report including setting, main characters and (in paragraph form) a summary of the story - be sure to include all main events.
    • A recommendation - would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
  5. Book reports may be typed or neatly handwritten.

Math

Students should continue to practice math facts throughout the summer. The following websites have activities to improve math skills:
